The Los Angeles Lakers have signed former Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards point guard Isaiah Thomas to a 10-day deal under the hardship exemption on Thursday.
According to The Athletic, Thomas decided to return to LA in an effort to pursue his ambition to continue playing in the NBA.
Last season, Thomas only played in three games with the New Orleans Pelicans and averaged 7.7 points per game.
Thomas signed with the Grand Rapids Gold, the G League affiliate of the Denver Nuggets, on Monday and scored 42 points in his first game with the team on Wednesday.
The NBA allowed the Lakers to sign the 32-year-old under the hardship exemption since Dwight Howard, Malik Monk, and Talen Horton-Tucker had been put in the league’s health and safety protocols Tuesday, and reportedly also added Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley in those protocols on Thursday.
Thomas played 10 seasons in the NBA, where he was named two-time All-Star and one All-NBA team. His most successful seasons came with the Boston Celtics.
Thomas averaged 24.7 points, 6.0 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 44.3 percent from the floor and 36.8 percent from behind the 3-point arc during his time at TD Garden.
