LeBron James signed a two-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. The deal is worth $97.1 million and goes through the 2024-25 season. His agent made the news public on Wednesday.

According to tweets by ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic NBA reporter Shams Charania, James will stay in Los Angeles for the next two seasons, giving the city a chance to win another title.

This contract makes James the highest-paid NBA player ever, with $532 million in guaranteed earnings over the course of his career, ESPN reports.

Lakers failed to make the playoffs despite James averaging 30.3 points per game in his 19th season, his highest scoring average since the 2005-06 campaign. This coming season was supposed to be the last one on LeBron’s prior $44.5 million contract.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement says James can only sign a two-year extension because he will be 38 or older when his current contract runs out.

In three of his four years with the Lakers, James has missed many games because of injuries. He was at peak performance during the 2019–20 season when the Lakers won their 17th NBA championship in the Florida bubble.

James’s decision to stay with the Lakers has ended rumors that he might leave as a free agent or in a trade, although it should be noted that the man himself hasn’t said anything about leaving the team on social media or publicly. He even welcomed new coach Darvin Ham to the Lakers.

Plus, now that James’ extension exceeds five percent raise during the second year, the four-time NBA champion cannot be traded this upcoming season.

In the meantime, James’ eldest son, Bronny, has been making headlines lately as he will be eligible for the NBA draft in 2024. James has often talked about playing with his son on the same NBA team before retiring.

Depending on the NBA salary cap, the superstar forward’s contract could be worth $111 million in 2023-24. The contract would guarantee James $532 million in career earnings, edging him ahead of Kevin Durant for the record-guaranteed career earnings accolade.
