Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray held an unscheduled press conference on Thursday to address the controversy surrounding the “independent study” addendum that was included in his new five-year, $230.5 million contract.

Murray jumped straight to the point and called the addendum simply “disrespectful” and “laughable.”

“I feel it’s necessary, you know, with what’s going on regarding me and the things that are being said about me,” the quarterback told reporters, as per CNN. “To think that I can accomplish everything that I have accomplished in my career and not be a student of the game and not have that passion and not take this serious is disrespectful, and it’s almost a joke.”

The Cardinals added the independent study addendum to the contract which requires Murray to “complete at least four (4) hours of independent study” during game weeks.

CNN continued the report by stating that Murray will not be considered “studying” if he “is not personally studying or watching the material while it is being displayed or played” or if the player is in an environment that could cause a distraction, such as video games, television or browsing the internet.

Following the backlash, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the clause had been removed on Wednesday and the Cardinals released a statement regarding the addendum removal from Murray’s contract.

“After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract. It was clearly perceived in ways that were never intended,” the statement said. “Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it’s ever been and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in this contract.”

Murray later added that he would not be in his current position right now if he did not put his utmost effort into his training.

“I’ve put in an incomprehensible amount of time, blood, sweat, tears and work into what I do, whether it’s football or baseball,” he said.

Murray has been voted to the Pro Bowl twice and was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 as he is entering his fourth season. In his three seasons so far in the league, he has thrown for 11,480 yards and 70 touchdowns.

"I think I was blessed with the cognitive skills to go out there and see it happen before it happens."
