Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant has spoken about his trade request during media day on Monday following a dramatic offseason surrounding his future in Brooklyn.

Durant defended his trade request to play somewhere else, citing there’s uncertainty with the franchise and a lack of accountability of Nets players in maintaining their play.

“There was a lot of uncertainty around our team last year…we came to a mutual agreement that we had to keep moving forward,” Durant said.

Via New York Post’s Brian Lewis, Durant said, “We shouldn’t have been losing all those games” as he demanded Nets players to be more responsible with their performances.

Without him on the court, the Nets had a hard time in their games. The matter at hand got worse as head coach Steve Nash and his men were not performing as expected and guard Kyrie Irving had to miss out on games due to his vaccination status.

The franchise finished seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 44-38 record. Not to mention the Nets’ streaks of defeats and an early playoff loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, which eventually led the 33-year-old Durant to say that’s enough.

Durant seemed disappointed with how the team performed last season and despite his newly-signed contract, the two-time NBA champion wanted to stay away from Brooklyn — hence, on June 30, he asked for a trade, a move that shocked NBA enthusiasts as it also tied with the potential parting of Irving.

For Durant, the move was essential seeing how Nets players lacked accountability. However, despite strong winds of departure talks, Durant remains at Barclays Center and might remain on the team.

Until then, only time will tell as the Nets will play in a preseason game against the Philadelphia 76ers on October 3.

The 12-time NBA All-Star showed his allegiance to the Nets by inking a four-year, $198 million extension in 2021. He was optimistic to lead Brooklyn to the championship until he was limited by an MCL injury, which sidelined him for four to six weeks in January this year.

“It was just a lot. Like, hearing Kev wanted a trade request, I opt in, it’s awkward,” Irving said. “It’s very awkward. I’m sitting at home, like, I don’t know what to think of it, but because there’s a trust that we have within each other, I just ultimately want to see him do well and be happy. So, if that wasn’t within our organization, I was gonna have to accept that and move on.”
