Former Los Angeles Lakers center and Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has taken a swipe at LeBron James for his words regarding issues that affect the African-American community.

The 74-year-old made the comments when he presented an award named in his honor, the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy, which was given to its inaugural recipient, Lakers forward Carmelo Anthony at Crypto.com Arena.

The trophy is intended to recognize a player’s work on social justice issues.

As to the comments he directed to James, he was referring to James’ foundation in Akron, Ohio, as per Los Angeles Times.

Abdul- Jabbar said, “I admire the things that he’s done that have gotten all of our attention. Sending a whole school to college, wow. That’s amazing.”

“His thoughtfulness and willingness to back it up with his wallet, you’ve got to give him credit for that,” he continued. “I’m not throwing stones. I just wish, some of the things he’s done he should be embarrassed about.”

Back in December, James shared a social media meme that showed COVID-19 being compared to the common cold and flu.

Abdul-Jabbar criticized LeBron’s Instagram post, adding that the meme was “uninformed” and potentially “encouraged vaccine hesitancy.”

“Some of the things that he’s done and said are really beneath him, as far as I can see, and some of the great things that he’s done. He’s standing on both sides of the fence almost,” Abdul-Jabbar noted.

He closed his statements by hoping LeBron could see his genuine intention as he has “only love for (James)” in his heart.

“There’s no envy there,” Abdul-Jabbar concluded. “With the issues that I was talking about, things that really affect the Black community, he should be careful. That’s all I’m asking.”
