Spanish professional golfer and former World No. 1 Jon Rahm won the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta this past weekend after hitting consistently during the four-day tournament with scores of 64, 66, 68, and 69.

Claiming the tournament’s title marks his second after last summer’s victory in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Right now, the 2020-2021 PGA Player of the Year has racked up a total of seven PGA Tour wins.

“I like to think every time I tee it up I’m a favorite. I play to win,” Rahm said. “Fortunately, I got my seventh PGA Tour win. It was a pretty stressful weekend, all the way to the end.”

Rahm wrapped up the tournament with 17-under. Behind him was Brandon Wu, Tony Finau, and Kurt Kitayama, as the trio each made 16-under and ranked tied for second on the player leaderboard.

The Spaniard was the favorite competing for the Mexico Championship when he made his 64 opening score on Thursday, April 28 all the way to the final day on Sunday, May 1. However, for him, it was a stressful weekend after a series of stresses on his putting.

“It wasn’t my best putting weekend, but I stayed aggressive. I was confident in what I was doing. I have faith in every part of my game and it showed,” he said.

Perhaps not only over the past weekend, but Rahm has also been through a lot in the last 11 months.

But, Rahm, who managed to secure the runner-up position in the Sentry Tour of Champions, is stepping in the right direction post-Mexico Open.

“It feels good to get this first win done,” he said. “Early in the season I had a couple chances and I couldn’t close it out. Today was a battle but I got it done. My first wire-to-wire victory. Even though it was hard at the end I’ll take it.”

He appeared to have successfully exceeded the expectations of golf enthusiasts in the Mexico Open and is closer than ever to retrieving the No. 1 rank from 2022 Masters Tournament winner Scottie Scheffler.

Days to get his hands on another trophy.  Rahm won the U S Open on June 20, 2021.

"I played amazing, and I was in incredible control of my game,"
