Jayson Tatum broke out of his shooting rut with a season-high 51-point performance to lead the Boston Celtics to a 116-87 win over the Washington Wizards on Sunday.

Tatum scored 48 of his 51 points in the first three quarters of Boston’s triumph, shooting 18-of-28 from the field and 9-of-14 from beyond the arc. He had missed 17 consecutive long-range shots in his previous three outings.

What makes his performance so incredible is how terribly Tatum had been shooting all season, especially the previous week. Previously, Tatum had missed 21 of his previous 22 three-point tries, lowering his season percentage to a career-low 31.1 percent.

“Obviously I know and everybody knows I haven’t been shooting the ball well lately, but that never discouraged me,” Tatum spoke to NBC Sports Boston shortly after the game. “I’m always the same person whether I miss 20 straight or whether I score 51.”

Tatum also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists to round out his phenomenal performance in the game.

The 23-year-old became only the player in Celtics history to have three regular-season games with 50 or more points. Tatum, who also scored 60 points in an overtime game against San Antonio back in April, shares the team record for points in a game with Larry Bird.
