The streak has come to an end. The Detroit Lions finally won their first game of 2021 on Sunday as quarterback Jared Goff threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown in the final seconds of the game to defeat the Minnesota Vikings at home in a walk-off triumph.

In the first half, Goff threw two touchdown passes to put Detroit ahead by 14 points, its biggest lead this season. However, he turned the ball over twice in the second half to help Minnesota rally.

When quarterback Kirk Cousins hit receiver Justin Jefferson for a three-yard touchdown with 1:50 left on the clock, it appeared like the Vikings were in a strong position to win, especially because the Lions had no remaining timeouts. The team’s two-point conversion, however, failed, making it 27-23.

Detroit’s first win of the year was not guaranteed until Goff came through in the end, leading a long drive and delivering a strong pass to the rookie receiver, St. Brown, who took advantage of a Vikings secondary that played too deep.

“It was as good as you can do it I think for us offensively,” Goff said of the final drive. “We were able to walk down the field there on them and make that play at the end. It came down to one play and we were able to make it.”

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has certainly been under pressure since the beginning of the season and he could not hide his relief after the game.

“My thought was, ‘Hey man, if we can for three hours just ease their suffering a little bit, that’s worth it. That’s worth it,'” Campbell said. “And so that’s kind of how I thought of this and we just did a great job. Players, they responded, played well.”

Before playing Minnesota, Detroit had a record of 0-10-1, losing four games by less than three points. Sunday’s win marked the Lions’ first since December 6, 2020, when they beat the Chicago Bears.
