Phillies manager Joe Girardi, with 12 months left on his three-year contract, is in the midst of a slump that has sent Philadelphia 10 ½ games behind the New York Mets in the National League East.
Phillies’ losses are due in part to poor fundamentals, poor communication, and other recurring issues. This can be attributed to the manager.
"We haven't met expectations so far, (but) we have too many good players and too many good pitchers for it to not turn around,"
- Kyle Gibson
Low Return on Investment
21-27
The Phillies are 21-27 despite a team salary of $233 million, the fourth-highest payroll in the majors, and a roster that includes 2021 NL MVP Bryce Harper’s, star catcher JT Realmutoace, as well as free-agents Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber.
"Sometimes what you're going through seems like the worst thing that you've ever been through. If you look back, you can probably point to a spot where you got through it. They just got to continue to work, continue to grind it out — it's going to turn. It's going to. I believe in them."
- Jow Girardi

No Option
The team did not pick up a 2023 option to retain Girardi, and he could be fired before the 2022 season plays out.
