Ryan Fitzpatrick might be out, but Washington’s Taylor Heinicke came through and brought home the win with his 30-yard touchdown pass to J.D. McKissic with 33 seconds remaining, to lead the Washington Football Team to a 34-30 road win over the Atlanta Falcons.

“I feel like I’ve kind of been doing that, those kind of plays, throughout my life,” Heinicke said. “That’s the kind of player I am. Hey, I grew up watching Brett Favre. I saw a lot of crazy stuff from him.”

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who threw four touchdowns in a losing effort, was clearly not happy with the final result.

“If we want to be the kind of football team that we want to be and the type offense we’d like to be, you get in those situations and you want to move the football, burn clock and get some first downs and end that football game,” Ryan said. “We didn’t do it. That part’s disappointing, and we’ve got to improve there.”

Falcons first-year coach Arthur Smith shared Ryan’s frustration as well.

“Obviously frustrating,” Smith said. “We had multiple opportunities to win that game. We didn’t. The second-to-last offensive drive — that was the one where we moved the ball a little bit. We had the third-down call they picked up. We have to do a better job.”

Atlanta running back and wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson described the atmosphere in the locker room.

“It sucks, but we’re all grown men here,” Patterson said. “We’ve got to pick this stuff up, come in tomorrow, watch the film and just learn from it and try to get to 2-3.”

The Falcons are heading to England next Sunday to face the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while Washington returns to FedExField to face the New Orleans Saints.
