Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies received the NBA’s Most Improved Player award on Monday, demonstrating to the world what an outstanding player he is.

Prior to this award, the Memphis guard won the Rookie of the Year in 2020. With his latest title, he successfully kept the promise that he made when he received the Rookie award. Back then, he pledged that he would get better from there.

“I always feel like there’s room for improvement,” Morant said in 2020. “I’m looking to improve in every category.” Morant was also a first-time All-Star this season.

He was the first Memphis player to win the Rookie Award of the Year since Pau Gasol in 2001-02. Now, he broke another record by becoming the first Memphis player to receive the Most Improved Player award.

Going from being the Rookie to being the Most Improved Player in just two years, the NBA gave a nod to the 22-year-old’s massive improvement. He had career-best scoring average of 27.4 points per game, 5.7 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 49.3 percent field-goal shooting. This was definitely a jump from his average of 19.1 points per game last season.

“It’s definitely big-time,” Morant said. “This award goes to me, but I feel like it’s a team effort.”

The award was first introduced in 1985-86. The NBA hopes to honor players who have made the most significant and drastic improvements from their preceding seasons. The voting panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters chose Morant for this season. Out of the 51 ballots that his name appeared on, he obtained 38 first-place votes and finished with 221 points.

Morant is now eyeing the next big award: league MVP. So far, only Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo has won the Most Improved and the MVP title in succession.

“That’s the goal,” Morant responded when asked about following Giannis’ step in winning both awards.

"Those were pretty much the two main areas I worked on this past summer,"
