Claude Giroux made his debut for the Florida Panthers on Thursday and had two assists to help lead the Panthers to a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre.

Giroux previously played for the Philadelphia Flyers before being traded to the Panthers for forward Owen Tippett and two draft picks in the 2023 and 2024 NHL Drafts, respectively.

“(Giroux has) been a great player in this league for a long time,” Panthers coach Andrew Brunette said. “(Chiarot), he’s a very great player in his own right on the front side of the puck. He showed it tonight. He had a lot of poise on 6-on-4 or 5-on-4, blocking shots. Really steady and clear.”

Florida goalie Spencer Knight had an impressive 28 saves for the Panthers and coach Andrew Brunette was overall pleased with the goaltender’s performance.

“[Knight] was really good,” Brunette said. “He maybe wasn’t tested too much early, then we kind of hung him out to dry a little bit, got a little bit sleepy in some of our coverages. And they worked really hard, they battled.

“They played a playoff-type game, they had some offensive guys, they had some looks,” he continued. “We were a little sleepy at times, but credit to them, too, for playing as hard as they did.”

Meanwhile, Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis was a disappointed that his men lost against Florida, but he preferred to see the positive side of the game.

“That’s a good team we played against tonight and I think we battled really well,” St. Louis said. “It was a good opportunity, and I know we didn’t get the result we wanted, but it was a fun game to play and a fun game to coach.”

Next up, the Panthers face the Ottawa Senators while Montreal hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs.
