New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has been showing progress in his recovery, multiple reports confirm.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network Insider tweeted on Monday that Barkley “is close to being fully cleared.”

“RB Saquon Barkley is gearing up to play Sunday vs. the Broncos, and sources say he’s close to being fully cleared to do so following major knee surgery,” wrote Rapoport. “The team needs to watch him through Thursday to gauge how his body responds to the workload. But he’s close.”

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler also reported last week that the 24-year-old was on the right track to play versus Denver.

Giants head coach Joe Judge gave the latest update on Barkley.

“I can’t speak for him directly but he was smiling today,” Judge said. “I want to see how he responds to a couple things physically within his body and make the best assessment going forward for him this week and going forward past that.”

The 39-year-old coach will consider advice from the medical team to determine who will be playing.

“You may manage somebody’s reps based on practice or a game, whatever it may be, but to me, when a doctor says someone is healthy for a game, you’ve got to be healthy enough to play,” he said. “You only take a limited number of guys to a game, so if the doctor says someone is good to go, they’ve got to be good to go for us.”

Barkley suffered a torn ACL in Week 2 last season during a game against the Chicago Bears. He was put on the injured reserve list in September 2020.
