Francisco Lindor opens up about the Mets’ offensive struggles
New York Mets’ shortstop Francisco Lindor was candid when asked about his performance this season.
Prior to his leg injury last month, the 27-year-old has only hit 11 home runs and 36 RBIs in 87 games. He knew those were not his best numbers.
Mets’ owner Steve Cohen also expressed his disappointment on Twitter with his team’s results so far. Cohen called his hitters “unproductive” on Wednesday.
“We have been getting that message the whole year,” Lindor said, referring to Cohen’s tweet. “We haven’t really hit all year long. I haven’t performed. I haven’t done it.
The four-time All-Star did not blame Cohen for his frustration.
“I’m with them,” Lindor said. “I haven’t performed, so that message that Steve sent the other day, he’s been an owner, he’s been a fan, he is very passionate, he is just letting people know how he felt. He’s been very vocal in tweeting in the past year that I have been aware of who he is. Message to us? No. The message has been sent every single day.”
Lindor and Javier Báez, who was diagnosed with back spasms injury, are close to returning to the squad, but time is not on the Mets’ side.
Manager Luis Rojas said Lindor and Báez could return as soon as Sunday.
“I want to be out there and grind with the boys,” Lindor said. “But we’ll see what happens.”
