Former Oakland Raiders, now Las Vegas Raiders, quarterback Daryle Lamonica passed away Thursday morning at his home in Fresno, California at the age of 80.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the passing of the former professional football player and confirmed the cause of death as “natural causes”.

“The Raiders Family is deeply saddened to learn of Daryle Lamonica’s passing earlier today,” the Raiders said in a statement. “The Raider Nation will forever miss his easy-going nature and warm smile. Our deepest condolences are with his wife Mary, son Brandon, the rest of the Lamonica family, teammates and friends.”

Lamonica played in both the AFL and NFL for 12 seasons, in which most of his career he spent with the Raiders. However, prior to the Raiders, the two-time Pro Bowler was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 24th round of the 1963 AFL Draft. The signing marked his grand foray to the NFL after a relatively stellar career in the AFL.

Lamonica was known for his great ability in throwing long passes and for adapting his throws well to any situation. This led NFL enthusiasts to crown him the nickname “The Mad Bomber.”

He alongside Glenn Bass was released to the Raiders in exchange for Art Powell and Tom Flores after a blissful three seasons career with the Bills.

His arrival in Oakland was very much welcomed. Lamonica helped the Raiders to claim four consecutive division titles in 1967-1970 alongside an appearance in Super Bowl II.

Some of the awards Lamonica won were two-time UPI AFL Player of the Year (1967 and 1969), alongside three-time AFL champion (1964, 1965, and 1967).

The legendary QB spent seven seasons in Oakland before signing with the Southern California Sun of the World Football League in 1975.
