Former NHL winger and Boston College star Jimmy Hayes has died at the age of 31.
On Monday, medics received a call from Hayes’ home in the Boston suburbs, where he was pronounced dead, according to the police. The officers refused to disclose other details surrounding his death.
Hayes was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round (60th) overall in 2008. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in December 2011, where he made his NHL debut.
“His warm personality made an immediate impact in the locker room and with our fans,” the Blackhawks said in a statement. “We’re proud of the memories he made in Chicago.”
In his 334 games in the NHL, Hayes scored 54 goals and had 55 assists. After playing for the Blackhawks, he moved to the Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins, and New Jersey Devils.
The last time he played professionally was in 2019. He once co-hosted a podcast named “Missin Curfew.”
Boston College also paid tribute to the 6 ft 5 in right-wing, writing on Twitter: “Boston College Hockey is heartbroken over the passing of Jimmy Hayes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Hayes family.”
In 2010, he helped Boston College win a national championship for the second time in a row and recorded 13 goals and 22 assists in 42 games.
Hayes hailed from Dorchester, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife, children, four siblings, and his parents Shelagh and Kevin Hayes Sr.
