Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Keith Yandle carved his name into the NHL history books on Tuesday night when he played in his record 965th consecutive game, which, unfortunately, came in a 4-3 loss to the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.
“I don’t think it has really sunk in,” Yandle said. “I’m grateful to play one game in this league, the best league in the world, surrounded by the best players. To be a part of the NHL and the NHL family for the last 16 years is more than a dream come true.”
His family was on hand to witness him breaking the record.
“The support I have had, it has meant the world to me,″ he said. “I’m very grateful.”
He was given a polite ovation at 7:24 of the first period by fans when he was recognized for his achievement. He raised his stick and then took to the ice and made a quick circle while waving in acknowledgement.
The previous record was held by Doug Jarvis, who played 964 straight games over the course of his career from October 8, 1975, to October 10, 1987. He set the record while playing for the Hartford Whalers.
The 35-year-old Yandle started his streak on March 26, 2009, playing for the Coyotes, who drafted him fourth in the 2005 draft. Overall, he has played 1,075 games overall with the Coyotes, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, and Flyers.
Yandle, who is a three-time All-Star, started the game alongside Ivan Provorov and played 18 shifts for 11:58 of ice time.
