Rookie quarterback Justin Fields replaced an injured Andy Dalton, and led the Chicago Bears to a 20-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at Soldier Field.
Fields came in for Dalton after he injured his knee in the second quarter of the game.
Dalton completed seven of his first eight passes for 41 yards and a touchdown to give the Bears a 7-0 early lead. Although the Bengals almost turned the game on its head by scoring 14 points in the last few minutes, the Bears managed to hold on to their lead and finished with the win.
Bears head coach Matt Nagy said he was delighted with Dalton’s performance so far.
“I thought he did a heck of a job,” Nagy said. “There’s a lot of stuff he will learn from watching the tape.”
On the other hand, Fields was upset with how he played in that game.
“I don’t think I’m pleased with how I played at all. I think there’s a lot more in me that I have to show,” Fields told ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson. “That’s going to come with time. I know it’s not going to happen overnight, so I’m just going to keep grinding, and no matter what happens, I know I’m meant for this. I’m meant to be here.”
Fields is currently 4-for-8 passing for 55 yards, and as things stand now, he is the most sensible choice for the Bears’ upcoming showdown against the Cleveland Browns next week.
