News surrounding the contract of the Cleveland Browns’ new quarterback Deshaun Watson is potentially going to pose problems for other teams in the NFL, according to Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti.
Speaking to ESPN,during the NFL league meetings, Bisciotti said he was shocked upon finding out about the Browns’ contract with Watson, adding it was “groundbreaking” and potentially could bring more difficulties in future hiring in the league.
“I’m trying to answer that when I had a reaction to it. And it’s like, ‘Damn, I wish they hadn’t guaranteed the whole contract,'” Bisciotti said. “I don’t know that he should’ve been the first guy to get a fully guaranteed contract. To me, that’s something that is groundbreaking, and it’ll make negotiations harder with others.”
The 61-year-old businessman appears to have made a reference to Watson landing a “never before seen” deal worth $230 million guaranteed for five-years with Cleveland.
But in a broader sense, Bisciotti worries that Watson’s deal could potentially prompt other QBs and their agents in the future to favor fully guaranteed contracts.
Additionally, Watson has been dealing with 22 civil lawsuits by women who accused the 26-year-old of sexual misconduct and harassment.
In spite of this, Cleveland signed him to the fully guaranteed contract, even though the league could still suspend him.
