The Denver Broncos announced Sunday morning that they had fired head coach Vic Fangio following their 28-24 loss to AFC West rivals Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday to end their regular season. Fangio had a 19-30 record over his three-year tenure in Denver.

Fangio joined the Broncos to replace Vance Joseph in 2019. He led the Broncos to finish 7-9 that year. In the following pandemic-impacted 2020 season, he and Denver finished 5-11.

“With the foundation in place, the progress that’s been made and the resources we have to get better, I’m excited about the future of our team,” Broncos general manager George Paton said in a statement released on Twitter through the team’s official account. “We will find an outstanding leader and head coach for the Broncos and our fans.”

Denver was Fangio’s first NFL head coaching job. Previously, he was a longtime defensive coordinator. He started his career with the Carolina Panthers in 1995 before having four more defensive coordinator jobs and finally landing the Denver job in 2019.

Under his leadership, the Broncos’ defensive line was 10th in yards allowed and third in points allowed during the 2021 season. It is expected that Fangio will be highly sought after as a defensive coordinator again following his departure from Denver.
