After a long silence on extension talks despite being in his final year, Deebo Samuel’s request to be traded from the San Francisco 49ers finally broke the news via ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.

The reasons were unclear at first, but NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said that it did not have anything to do with his pay.

“Money is not at the root of the issues for Deebo Samuel, otherwise that could be fixed with a big offer. But there are also issues with how he’s used,” Rapoport said.

The wide receiver was first drafted by the 49ers in Round 2 of the 2019 NFL Draft. That season, he also rushed twice for 53 yards.

After some analysis, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero later revealed his interpretation of Samuel’s decision. Pelissero believed that Samuel hoped to play a single role as a wide receiver and not double as a running back.

“It sounds like there’s multiple layers to this, but certainly one of them is Deebo Samuel wants to be a receiver and not a receiver/running back,” Pelissero said.

Last season, the 2021 first-team All-Pro WR finished with 1,405 yards on 77 catches out of 121 attempts. He also rushed for 365 yards on 59 attempts. He had more rushing touchdowns than receiving ones. He ended up leading in receiving yards as well as being the second-best in rushing yards.

“His rushing attempts were significantly up last season from where they’ve been in the past. We all know that he’s a really, really physical player, but there probably are some concerns here about longevity,” Pelissero added. The counterpoint to that, of course, is that part of the reason that Deebo Samuel is so valuable is because he’s versatile.”

"San Francisco would pay Deebo Samuel today, tomorrow, the next day,"

"Like I've long said, those guys are going to be a part of us for a long, long time,"
