Former NFL player Danny Woodhead has moved on to a new sport – golf – after spending a decade in the league with the New York Jets, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Baltimore Ravens.

A round of 71 at Omaha Country Club this week helped Woodhead advance past local qualifying and into sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open in June.

Qualifiers for the third major of the year will be held on either May 23 or June 6 at 11 sites in Japan, Canada, and the United States.

The 2022 U.S. Open is set to take place June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Steady AS She Goes

Danny Woodhead was one of five golfers to advance from the 84-golfer field, only outplayed by amateur Conner Peck (-1). Woodhead’s scorecard included four birdies, four bogeys, and 10 pars.

4,936

Woodhead amassed 4,936 rushing and receiving yards over the course of his NFL career, along with 32 touchdowns.

This Game Is Not Easy

Every year, over five hundred players attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open. In fact, only 10 percent of those who enter local event move on to sectionals, and the same number who make it to sectionals move on to the tournament at the end of June.  To qualify for the U.S. Open field, Woodhead must earn a spot at Springfield (Ohio) Country Club on June 6.

"That's why I think some guys, they struggle with (life after football), They don't really know what to do, you know? I've been fortunate to jump right in. And I don't miss anything about football. I gave everything that I had. I just don't miss it. I've found a passion ... I enjoy this as much as I enjoyed playing football. It's kind of my football now, you know?"

"Some people get lucky."
