Shams Charania and Shams Amick of The Athletic have reported that Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard “would like to play with Philadelphia 76ers three-time All-Star Ben Simmons,” who is currently surrounded around uncertainty regarding his future with the Sixers.
Charania and Amick also reported that former general manager Neil Olshey, who was fired on Friday after violating the team’s code of conduct by creating a toxic working environment, had previously “discussed the framework of a trade for Simmons.”
“The 76ers, sources said, at one point asked the Trail Blazers for McCollum and multiple draft picks and multiple draft swaps, which Portland rejected,” The Athletic reported. “Olshey maintained significant confidence in the roster he constructed.”
Simmons was known to have issues with the 76ers. It was also reported that he wanted to be traded during the offseason, but Philadelphia insisted the 26-year-old honors the five-year, $177 million maximum contract he signed in 2019. Whoever replaces Olshey will have to make a decision on this.
Meanwhile, as a result of his request being denied, Simmons has kept his distance from the team. It was said that he refused to take part in drills during practice and was sent home and suspended for insubordination.
