Coyotes only NHL franchise to ease players dress code
A recent ESPN survey of NHL teams found that the Arizona Coyotes are the only team with plans to fully relax their player game-day dress code for the upcoming season.
The NHL is the only major North American men’s professional sports league to require its players to dress in a certain way on game day.
Exhibit 14, Paragraph 5 of the CBA reads: “Players are required to wear jackets, ties and dress pants to all Club games and while traveling to and from such games unless otherwise specified by the Head Coach or General Manager.”
The NHL relaxed the rule during the 2020 postseason in Toronto and Edmonton only to revert to the CBA policy later.
Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun is happy with his team’s less stringent dress code policy.
“To be the first team to go no dress code was awesome,” Chychrun told ESPN. “The guys loved it. I think it’s great to be able to show a bit of your personality and your closet other than just your suits. I had fun with it. I enjoyed it. I’m glad it’s something we’ll continue to do.”
Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews also agreed with Chychrun’s take on the situation.
“I wish there was no dress code for games and stuff,” Matthews told ESPN in the latest interview. “I don’t mind wearing a suit, but it gets old, I guess. It gets old pretty quick. I think it’d be fun to wear different things and be able to express yourself, similar to what the NBA does or even the NFL a little bit.”
The Columbus Blue Jackets and Nashville Predators are planning to have their players wear team-issued tracksuits to games this season. The Seattle Kraken are considering a relaxed dress code for their players as well.
>One NHL player told ESPN that he and his teammates have openly talked about their desire to follow the Coyotes' lead. >“Our general manager is so old-school, though. I just don't see it happening," the player said. "It's ridiculous. Whatever I wear to the rink is not going to affect the way I play. In fact, if I'm not wearing a stuff suit and tie for an hour on a bus and I'm wearing something I'm more comfortable in, maybe I'll play better.” Willing to be that’s an Islanders player.
Some guys who still love fashion will wear their fancy suits because they want to, and that’s great! Other guys might want to be more casual and that’s great too! Just let guys wear what they want. You can add little rules here and there, but this shouldn’t be a big deal
The suit mandate is so outdated. People already think NHLers are robots, let the boys dress with some flair
I see no harm in relaxing standards and watch enough football to know that the arrivals/walk-ins generate buzz. Would said buzz generate new eyes for the on ice product I have no idea but its worth trying in my opinion.
There is an old guy wearing a plaid suit in Mississauga who is yelling at a cloud because of this.
i can remember being 6 and having to wear a shirt and tie. felt so good walking into an arena at 7am looking like we all meant business. continued throughout my life in sports, ending up wearing full suits and ties. Loved it. Couldn't imagine the suits i'd be getting with NHL money.
>"I wish there was no dress code for games and stuff," Matthews told ESPN. Matthews expresses himself fashion-wise *more* than enough with that "moustache" of his.
Genuinely surprised at the replies in here. In other threads the majority seem to say the players are boring, not allowed to express themselves, not allowed to be individuals, no marketing, and so on. Yet the majority in here are calling for them to keep wearing the same suits and ties as has been tradition for 100 years. Just because they're millionaires doesn't mean they must wear suits. Are they helping you pick out life insurance, or representing you in court? No, they are just playing a sport. I say let them go around in whatever they are comfortable with, & not forcing them into stuffy suits just for the cameras.
