The Tampa Bay Rays have signed free agent pitcher Corey Kluber to a one-year deal worth around $8 million, which could be worth $13 million if he reaches incentives, a source told ESPN, corroborating with other multiple reports.

Kluber, a two-time Cy Young award winner who turns 36 next April, spent last season with the New York Yankees, but he was limited to only 80 innings due to shoulder injury that forced him to be out for three months.

In New York, Kluber struck out 82 and walked 33 in those 80 innings. He recorded a 5-3 record with a 3.83 ERA in 16 starts for the Yankees and struck out nine batters in a 2-0 win over the Texas Rangers.

The Yankees need to find Kluber’s replacement to accommodate the absence of Zack Britton (likely to miss all of 2022 after Tommy John surgery), while Aroldis Chapman and Chad Green will all be entering the final year of their contracts.

“I think you’d all agree you can never have enough starting pitching,” Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said at the MLB owners’ meetings this month. “I think starting pitching is a need year after year.”

As for the Rays, Kluber’s arrival could help the team’s top young pitchers in the upcoming 2022 season. Tampa Bay has left-handers Ryan Yarbrough and Josh Fleming set to return, along with Tommy Romero.

Both Yonny Chirinos (elbow injury) and Brendan McKay (thoracic outlet syndrome surgery) are hoping to make a comeback at some point early next season.
