Indianapolis Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez has reportedly suffered an injury to his Achilles while running during Tuesday’s practice, according to the team’s spokesperson.

Sanchez is expected to undergo further examination on Wednesday and if the test confirms a tear, it will be a major setback for the Colts since a torn Achilles usually requires an entire season to recover.

Currently, Indianapolis does not have a backup punter to cover Sanchez and now suddenly the team needs to address this problem immediately before the season starts in just a couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old Sanchez has become an important part of the Colts roster since 2017 just right after longtime punter Pat McAfee announced his retirement. According to Sports Illustrated, Sanchez recorded 59 punts for 2,627 yards, including a team-record 79-yard punt versus the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7. He also handles kickoff duties for the Colts, kicking 89 times for 5,687 yards and 44 touchbacks.

Losing Sanchez is not new for Indianapolis. Back in 2020, the former Hawaii Rainbow Warriors punter underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and had to miss two games. However, he returned to the field and finished the remainder of the season.

Colts head coach Frank Reich could set his eyes on several prospects to fill Sanchez’s position if he is confirmed out for the upcoming new season. Former Buffalo Bills punter Matt Haack is a promising option for Indianapolis. Haack had 52 punts for 2,230 yards in 2021 with the Bills. Previously, he was the punter for the Miami Dolphins for four seasons.

Another former Dolphins punter to consider is Michael Palardy who recorded 78 punts for 3,489 yards for Miami last season.

Reich could also target free agent Ty Long who spent 2019-2021 with the Los Angeles Chargers. Long had 46 punts for 2,091 yards last season and also handled kickoff duties for the Chargers in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

The Colts will face the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium for the season opener on September 11.

Rigoberto or Rodrigo? I can't remember.

The Colts now face questions at kicker and punter, as well as on kickoffs. Rodrigo Blankenship has outperformed Jake Verity on field goals in camp, but he is still unproven on clutch and lengthy kicks, and now he needs a new holder. During the past two years, Blankenship has kicked off 20 times with 14 touchbacks.

Sanchez came out swinging!

In 2017, Sanchez set an NFL record for net punting average by a rookie of 42.6 yards/punt.
