Indianapolis Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship felt discomfort and pain in his hip during a warm-up session before Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, which ended in a 31-25 overtime loss for the Colts.

“It was kind of a stabbing pain every time I cocked my leg back to swing,” Blankenship said.

Colts head coach Frank Reich was confident when asked about his decision to send Blankenship to the field in that game.

“I knew he was compromised, but when he made the 43-yarder, I thought, ‘We’re good,'” Reich said. “I had no one on the medical staff coming up and saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got to really be careful.’ I knew he was hurting, but other players are hurting, too, and I think Rod is a tough guy. He was playing through it the best he could. I just assumed after we made that 43-yarder that we were good.”

In the end, Blankenship missed two field goals, one was blocked, and the other was wide left on a 47-yard attempt at the end of regulation. Indianapolis was leading 25-9 in the fourth quarter. But 12 minutes proved more than enough for Baltimore to turn things around.

“I thought that was a good operation,” Blankenship said of the blocked kick. “I don’t think (the injury) had any effect on that kick. I felt like I’d made pretty solid contact on that ball. It would have been nice to make that (47-yard) kick and win the game, but it just didn’t happen.”

The 24-year-old will have his hip and leg examined, and coach Frank Reich would certainly hope Blankenship’s pain is not a sign of anything serious since the Colts have already lost safety Andrew Sendejo and cornerback Xavier Rhodes to potential concussion.

“We’re making progress, but that’s not good enough in this league,” Reich added. “I know we have the right players and the right coaches in there; we’ve just got to keep fighting to get better, learn from our mistakes and learn how to finish games.”

The Colts return to Lucas Oil Stadium to host the Houston Texans in Week 6.
