Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Baker Mayfield announced he will undergo surgery on the torn labrum in his non-throwing left shoulder.

“Now it’s time for me to start looking at what’s best for me and my health. … I’m pretty damn beat up right now,” Mayfield said, per Jake Trotter of ESPN.

The quarterback has been dealing with shoulder discomfort since Week 2 of the season and with the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, Mayfield’s decided to move forward with surgery.

Mayfield completed just 16 of his 32 passes for 185 yards against the Steelers and was clearly struggling to find connections on his passes.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski agreed that the shoulder injury and harness had affected Mayfield’s performance this season, and defended his decision not to give the QB an extended rest.

“Throughout this whole thing, we have tried to make the right decision based on all the information available to us,” Stefanski said. “Constant dialogue with our medical staff, with Baker, and throughout have really felt comfortable based on all that information that he was able to play.”

Stefanski added that Mayfield’s surgery could be underway as soon as this week, so the 26-year-old will not play in Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Mayfield could potentially be back around May or June.

“It’s not gonna always be pretty or smooth, but I’m a fighter,” Mayfield noted. “If anybody ever questions how much I want it, just turn on this tape. It wasn’t pretty, but I kept going, kept swinging; that’s who I am, and that’s what I will continue to be.”
