The Cleveland Browns have acquired Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson as a replacement for Baker Mayfield. However, there is one lingering problem for the Browns as Watson is still facing around 20 civil suits for allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct.

The Browns defended their decision of acquiring Watson claiming that they have conducted their own “extensive” background checks and research for the quarterback.

“We have done extensive investigative, legal and reference work over the past several months to provide us with the appropriate information needed to make an informed decision about pursuing him and moving forward with him as our quarterback,” Browns GM Andrew Berry released a statement.

Team owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam said they would keep an eye on Watson’s situation as it progresses.

“We are acutely aware and empathetic to the highly personal sentiments expressed about this decision,” the Haslams said in a statement. “Our team’s comprehensive evaluation process was of utmost importance due to the sensitive nature of his situation and the complex factors involved. We also understand there are still some legal proceedings that are ongoing and we will respect due process.”

On the contrary, Tony Buzbee, the attorney of the women accusing Watson of sexual misconduct said that he was not informed of anything regarding this trade at all.

“The Browns organization did not reach out to me. I didn’t expect them to do so, and can understand why they didn’t. But, knowing what I know, they probably should have,” Buzbee said via ESPN.

Watson’s contract includes a guaranteed $230 million over five years as well as first-round draft picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024, along with two other picks.
