The Philadelphia Flyers’ Claude Giroux was named MVP of the NHL All-Star game after leading the Metropolitan Division to a 6-4 win over the Pacific Division on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, home of the Golden Knights.
The seven-time All-Star won his first MVP award after scoring two goals in the final, and another in the semifinal, of the All-Star extravaganza. Giroux received a $1 million check, which he shared with the winning players.
“On the bench, we had a blast today,” Giroux said. “Everybody was having a good time. Guys were yelling to play defense and win battles and block shots. We just had fun today.”
Giroux had also scored three goals to lead the Metropolitan Division over the Central Division to secure a spot in the final.
The Philadelphia Flyers captain also joked that their start was from “preparation” for the finale.
“It was funny how guys just wanted to win,” Giroux said in an interview with ESPN. “I’ve never seen (Washington Capitals forward Evgeny) Kuznetsov work so hard for face-offs before. Even when I play against him in the regular season. It was kind of goofing around, but at the same time we wanted to win. Might as well. We’re here, right?”
The All-Star game also saw a strong performance by New Jersey’s youngest All-Star, the 20-year-old Jack Hughes, who scored three goals for the Metropolitan.
Hughes also managed to get two goals for the team in its 6-4 win over the Pacific in the first semifinal. On the other hand, Alex DeBrincat and Jordan Kyrou had a pair of goals each in the Central’s 8-5 win over the Atlantic in the second semifinal.
