The Boston Celtics have waived former No. 2 overall pick Jabari Parker ahead of Wednesday’s season opener, according to a report by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The move left the Celtics with 14 players on their active roster, opening up a spot on the team’s regular 15-man roster in addition to an open two-way contract slot. This also means that Boston would be exempted from paying Parker’s $2.3 million contract.

The 26-year-old Parker is a seven-year veteran and has been on six NBA teams after playing for the Milwaukee Bucks in 2014. Although he was once a threatening player, his offensive capabilities are nowadays limited.

Parker joined the Celtics on April 16, 2020, and appeared in 10 games last season. He averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game.

Celtics head coach Ime Udoka said Boston would soon finalize their roster, meaning the new president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, will have to fill the spot left by Parker or hire a player via a two-way contract immediately.
