The Brooklyn Nets were the title favorites coming into the season, but turned out to be one of the worst nightmares on the court.

With the leading trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden, it could take some time to accept that they had one of the poorest performances this season.

“Expected to be a force, Nets turned out to be a farce,” said Brian Mahoney of The Associated Press.

Many things led to their inevitable collapse. Durant had a knee injury midseason and was sidelined for six weeks. Harden, who had been traded for the 76er Ben Simmons, played passively during his time in Brooklyn.

The biggest blow had to be Irving’s refusal to get vaccinated. This prevented him from playing home games, leaving him only eligible to play in road games, which he didn’t do for much of the season. In total, he played in just 29 out of 82 games.

“I think it was just really heavy emotionally, the season. We all felt it,” Irving said. “I felt like I was letting the team down at a point, where I wasn’t able to play. We were trying to exercise every option for me to play. But I never want it to just be about me and it became a distraction at times, and as you see we just had some drastic changes.”

Meanwhile, Simmons, never got to play due to a herniated disk. The point guard’s last game was wplayedwith Philly back in June 2021.

“(Stuff) happens. No crying over spilled milk. It’s about how we can progress and get better from here,” said Durant. “I mean, we see that we’ve been through a lot this year. Everybody in the organization knows what we went through, so no need, no time to feel regret or be too pissed off. It’s about how we can find solutions to get better.”

"It wasn't that surprising to see the Celtics win the series as they played some of the best basketball in the league down the stretch,"
