The Cleveland Cavaliers made major news headlines Thursday after acquiring Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell in exchange for a massive trade pack that reportedly includes forward Lauri Markkanen, guard Ochair Agbaji, guard Collin Sexton, three unprotected first-round picks, and two pick swaps, as per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Before the Cavaliers, Mitchell’s name was linked to his hometown New York Knicks. However, the Knicks walked out of the trade, citing that the several unprotected picks requested by the Jazz were expensive.

Cleveland, on the other hand, was also reported to be one of the teams in the Mitchell sweepstakes, but not as ambitious as the Knicks. There were also reports that the Cavs pulled out from Mitchell’s trade last August.

“Cleveland Cavaliers have removed themselves from Donovan Mitchell trade talks, per SNY sources. Doesn’t seem like there are any suitors at moment who can approach what Knicks can offer Utah – even if you take RJ Barrett off the table. So this trade is still NYK’s to lose,” SNY’s Ian Begley wrote.

Trading the three-time All-Star would likely mean that the Jazz’s newly-hired head coach Will Hardy and the front office is eyeing a complete overhaul. The reason is likely due to Utah’s fifth-place finish last season behind the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference and losing to them in the first round of the playoffs with a 4-2 series defeat.

Similarly, acquiring the 25-year-old implies a roster overhaul for the Cavaliers, who were only limited to finishing in ninth position in the Eastern Conference last season. Now that Mitchell is on the team, second-year coach J. B. Bickerstaff has an additional backcourt piece. He can pair Mitchell with 2022 All-Star guard Darius Garland.

Ready to punch in

Mitchell was initially drafted by the Denver Nuggets with the 13th overall pick in 2017. He was traded immediately to the Jazz for Tyler Lydon and Trey Lyles. In over five seasons with the Jazz, the 2018 All-Rookie First Team has started in 337 out of 345 games played. Last season, Mitchell averaged 25.9 points and made had assists in 67 games.

Mitchell has also played 39 postseason games for the Jazz, averaging 28.3 points and shooting 43.1 percent from the field.
