Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was spotted on the training field on Thursday and could return to lead the Browns against the Detroit Lions this weekend.
“He is as tough of a mental guy as I have been around,” offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said. “I do not think it will affect him. He prepares himself as well as anybody I have been around during the week of preparation. He does a great job of trying to get healthy and taking care of his body each week. Hopefully, he will continue to heal and feel better each week, but it is tough, and he is battling through, much like a lot of our guys right now.”
Mayfield is still recovering from knee and foot injuries in addition to his shoulder problems. The 25-year-old looked convincing while firing passes and moving well during Thursday’s open practice sessions.
Meanwhile, Lions quarterback Jared Goff said Detroit would have to show their best if they want to get their first win of the season on Sunday.
“Knowing where they are, obviously. Both of those guys have had their times and have their moments when they’ve been as special as everybody, and they still are,” Goff said on facing the Browns’ Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney.
Mayfield felt discomfort in his right knee in the third quarter of last week’s 45-7 loss to the New England Patriots. Backup QB Case Keenum replaced him for the remainder of that game.
