Steve Nash’s tenure as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets has come to an end. Nash was sacked following the team’s poor start to the 2022 season with a 2-5 record.

Nash and Brooklyn agreed to part ways on Tuesday afternoon. The news came ahead of the game against the Chicago Bulls.

Nets general manager Sean Marks thanked Nash for everything he had done for the team. He said that the decision to fire Nash was difficult. However, after careful consideration, the organization decided to replace him with Jacque Vaughn.

Nash has since released a statement regarding his firing on social media.

“A very heartfelt thanks to Joseph Tsa and Clara Tsai, along with Sean Marks, for giving me the opportunity to coach the Brooklyn Nets,” said Nash. “It was a pleasure to work with the players, performance team, and front office every day.

“I’m especially grateful to my coaching staff and video room, who are a talented group with so much character and professionalism.”

The Nets have been in decline since hiring Nash in 2020. With Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant on his side, Nash won nearly 60 percent of his regular-season games and went 7-9 in the playoffs. Nash finished his two-plus seasons with Brooklyn with a 92-62 record.

When Nash joined the team, he was expected to lead the Nets to compete for a championship with Irving and Durant. However, he only led the team to the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they were defeated in overtime by the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 2021 season was even more disappointing, as Irving missed significant time due to his refusal to get vaccinated. Then, former MVP James Harden was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ben Simmons. Later, in the first round of the playoffs, the Nets were defeated by the Boston Celtics.

The situation worsened in recent months after Durant reportedly demanded a trade.

"Since becoming head coach, Steve was faced with a number of unprecedented challenges, and we are sincerely grateful for his leadership, patience, and humility throughout his tenure."

- Sean Marks

"You're always shocked when a move like this happens, but it's normal in the NBA, so it's about getting ready for the game tonight."

- Kevin Durant
