Ben Simmons will have to miss out playing in the Brooklyn Nets’ Game 4 against the Boston Celtics due to his back injury.

The three-time NBA All-Star has not played for the Nets since he was traded from the Philadelphia 76ers due to a herniated disk in his back.

In fact, Simmons has not played a game since the second round of the playoffs on June 20, 2021, wherethe Sixers lost 103-96 to the Atlanta Hawks.

Simmons’ herniated disk was first diagnosed in March and he had received an epidural shot to lessen the pain. He did his training regularly and had been predicted to make a comeback for the upcoming final game of the playoff series.

However, the 25-year-old’s rehabilitation process may take longer than expected since he woke up on Sunday morning with back soreness.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said, “The Nets and Ben Simmons expected he would be ready to play on Monday, but after getting on the court yesterday Simmons says he awoke with back soreness today. In the end, the team and Simmons agreed he’ll remain out for Game 4.”

Nets coach Steve Nash said that he still had “no idea” when the point guard would return.

“That’s a good question,” said Nash. “Part of the decision has to be Ben’s. I think that he has to be all-in. And so that is a part of the equation, that’s fair. It’s not all on Ben. It’s not like, ‘Ah, come on, you didn’t play Ben.’ This is a unique situation. He’s never played with his teammates. And to go into a playoff situation after a long period of inactivity and injury is not straightforward.”

The Australian international joined the Nets with Seth Curry and Andre Drummond this February and has three years remaining on his contract beginning next season.

“I feel bad for anybody who was his teammate. He quit on LSU, he quit on the Philadelphia 76ers and now, he ain’t showing up for the Brooklyn Nets.”
