Bobby Witt Jr. is one of baseball’s best and brightest prospects, which he showed with a stellar debut performance on Thursday when he helped the Kansas City Royals defeat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 at Kauffman Stadium.

“It was a dream come true, truly,” Witt said. “And this was the day I’ve been waiting for my whole life. Now it’s here, and I want to just keep doing it.”

Witt’s debut was attended by local royalty, including the mayor of Kansas City, the national NCAA champion Kansas Jayhawk men’s basketball team, and Royals’ Hall of Famer George Brett.

The occasion was simple — to watch Witt Jr. make his debut, and what better place to debut than at home on MLB Opening Day.

“Everyone wants to see the kid,” Brett said.

Witt did not disappoint, and as he approached the plate it did not take long for the stadium to be filled with people chanting his name “Bob-by, Bob-by.”

Witt’s first MLB hit was a clutch go-ahead double in the eighth inning that secured Kansas’ victory.

“I thought I’d be a lot more nervous, honestly,” Witt said. “But before the introductions, nothing. During the game, nothing. First at-bat, nothing. So, when’s this gonna happen? It was awesome. It just felt right.”

Witt is the son of Bobby Witt, a longtime major league pitcher who last played for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The former player retired after helping Arizona win the 2001 World Series.
