Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow was taken to the hospital to be evaluated for a possible throat contusion following the Bengals’ 25-22 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the team announced.

Burrow managed to play the entire game, completing 26 of 38 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the team medical director for the Cincinnati Reds and a consultant for NFL players at Beacon Orthopaedics, said a throat contusion is rare in the league.

“They’re not common, but when they happen, you’ve got to make sure nothing is fractured,” Kremchek said. “Typically they’ll go to the hospital and be evaluated by a CAT Scan just to make sure there are no fractures or threatening injuries.”

Burrow, the first overall pick by the Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft, had to be sidelined for six games during his rookie year after suffering a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee. He underwent surgery and made a full recovery in time for the start of the this season.

Cincinnati heads to Detroit next week to face the Lions, who have so far lost all their games this season. If Burrow is still not cleared by the medical team, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor will go to Brandon Allen to fill Burrow’s shoes.
