New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was questioned on his decision to try for a field goal late in the fourth quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, where his team lost 19-17.

New England quarterback Mac Jones threw an incomplete pass to Jakobi Meyers on third down late in the game, and the Patriots faced a fourth-and-three situation with 59 seconds to play. Belichick then called kicker Nick Folk into the game to try and put New England back in the lead with a 56-yard field goal attempt, but it came short.

That led to the question: Was that the right call?

“We converted two third downs in the game,” Belichick told reporters Monday morning. “Nick had kicked well. No, that wasn’t any consideration.”

In his weekly interview on WEEI, the 69-year-old coach stood his ground on his decision to put Folk on the field.

“He hit that one well. Just missed by a couple inches,” Belichick said.

Belichick was confident because Folk has successfully hit 36 straight field goals since 2020 before Sunday’s miss. During pregame warmups, Folk even managed to kick one from 58 yards.

“When I hit it, I thought it was good,” Folk said. “Wasn’t planning it to go left. That’s the nature of the beast. I hit it just about as best I could. This one’s on me.”

New England is currently 1-3. They will face the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium this Sunday.
