The Cleveland Browns have decided to keep Baker Mayfield as their starting quarterback for the 2022 season.
Mayfield, the top pick in the 2018 NFL draft, is entering the last year of his rookie contract. He is expected to be given an extension or the franchise tag.
Coming off a successful 2020 season, the Browns struggled to a 7-9 record this year and, due to his shoulder injury, were without him in their season finale on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Backup Case Keenum started at quarterback in place of Mayfield and led the Browns to a 21-16 victory.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski and Mayfield have spoken during exit meetings, and they’re on the same page regarding the quarterback’s future with the team. Mayfield got a fully guaranteed $18-plus million deal to stay in Cleveland.
Mayfield’s season wasn’t exactly perfect. He suffered several injuries, including a shoulder fracture, and he had to skip three games. Still, it wasn’t all on Mayfield, as various factors contributed to the Browns’ shortcomings this past season, including game-plan issues and execution.
In 2021, Mayfield threw for 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns. He’s also had 13 interceptions and an 83.1 passer rating.

its the right decision imo, i doubt cleveland would want to move off the most competent QB they have had in the last 2 decades
I don’t think he’s a bad QB, this season was really injury plagued. Next year is make or break
I think it makes sense, for at least the next year. Still not a huge payday for starting QB standards, and the draft talent appears thin.
And the award for the most "no fucking shit" report goes to... this one. WR remains the biggest need and should remain as such.
Kinda of a non story this year right? 18 million fully guaranteed to Baker next year, and who where they going to get?
The Browns had NOTHING for like 20 years. No reason to dump their established guy after he had an underwhelming year due to injury.
Rodgers was a pipe dream, so was Wilson. The draft class is supposed to be really weak at QB, so there weren’t many options for the FO other than this. Low risk, high reward. He plays like dog shit again, ya let him walk. If he actually establishes himself as a franchise QB then ya get him signed.
It’s crazy this is all news now all because of that shit article by MKC. Cleveland was always going to stick with Baker. Pretty sure analytics would never say to trade your most valuable assets for the next 3-5years for an aging QB (Wilson or Rodgers) Everyone knew baker was playing hurt, don’t understand why they decided to keep playing him with the injury. Yes baker said he was fine but you can see it was really affecting his play and down the stretch you saw it was really messing with him mentally on there field
The #Browns are moving forward with Baker Mayfield as their starting QB, with the parties on the same page heading into the offseason, sources say. https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1480147727522664448
I would love to see what he could do with the offense they had this year while healthy. Hopefully we get to see that next season.
