Still recovering from their World Series Game 6 loss against the Atlanta Braves, the Houston Astros might have to say goodbye to shortstop Carlos Correa soon.
“It’s the only thing that was going through my mind, to be honest,” Correa said post-game game when asked if he had worn his last Astros jersey that night.
The 27-year-old is entering the offseason as the market’s top available free agent. He recorded 26 home runs and 92 runs batted in last season.
Correa and the Astros discussed a long-term contract extension back in the Spring. However, the talks broke down as Houston “didn’t get close” to an offer of $125 million which Correa was reportedly hoping to get. In contrast, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor contract is worth $341 million.
“They made it very clear to me: we [Astros] don’t believe in big contracts,” Correa told reporters back then. “We don’t believe in long contracts.”
Meanwhile, manager Dusty Baker reportedly will return to Minute Maid Stadium next season as Astros owner Jim Crane and Baker are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to hold talks on a new contract.
“Look, last year we got one game short of the World Series, and this year we were two games short of the championship,” the 72-year-old said. “I’ve still got some unfinished business. I mean, I love these guys over here. I love the town of Houston. The fans are behind us.”

The Astros could have been the Patriots, who got caught cheating but became a dynasty anyway. Instead they will be the Russian Olympic team, which ... just got caught cheating.
