On Tuesday night at Oracle Park, as the San Francisco Giants defeated the San Diego Padres 13-2, Alyssa Nakken made history by becoming the first-ever female on-field coach in major league baseball, as she filled in for Antoan Richardson as first base coach.

She took to the field in the third inning after Richardson was ejected.

When her name was announced, Nakken received a warm reception from the audience.

“You feel a sense of pride to be out there,” she said. “Me personally, it’s the best place to watch a game, that’s for sure. It’s a big deal. I feel a great sense of responsibility and I feel it’s my job to honor those who have helped me to where I am.”

Previously, the 31-year-old joined the Giants in January 2020, and coached the position during a spring training game in July.

Since then, she has received high praise from the Giants’ front office and has been focusing primarily on baserunning as well as outfield defense.

Moreover, Nakken’s historical achievement came a few days after Rachel Balkovec debuted as the first female manager of the New York Yankees’ Single-A Tampa Tarpons.
