Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 750th NHL goal on Saturday night during the Caps 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Also scoring in the game were Aliaksei Protas and Garnet Hathaway, while goaltender Ilya Samsonov recorded 17 saves.
Ovechkin scored his 750th goal on a three-on-two rush at 3:12 of the second period. John Carlson passed the puck to Ovechkin, which he received in the neutral zone. He then skated over the blue line on the right-side of the rink and netted the puck through Daniil Tarasov’s defenses. The Capitals were then leading 2-0.
“I think I played against his father in Russia,” Ovechkin said of Tarasov after the game.
There were four seasons in which Ovechkin played against Daniil’s father, Vadim Tarasov, who was also a goaltender. Ovechkin last faced the elder Tarasov in the KHL during the 2012 NHL lockout.
“I think he has a bright future. He’s big, strong,” Ovechkin said .
Washington is currently 4-1-1 in its past six games, while the Blue Jackets lost four road trip games and were outscored 18-6. Tarasov made his second career start as Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo are sidelined. He stopped 29 of 31 shots.
The Capitals face the Anaheim Ducks on Monday at 7 p.m. ET
