Aaron Rodgers is known as a hugger, and that was the Green Bay Packers quarterback’s response to backlash over his maskless hug with TV reporter Erin Andrews following a socially distanced interview after Green Bay’s Christmas Day win over the Cleveland Browns.

Rodgers and Andrews held a quick interview just after Rodgers led his team to a 24-20 victory over the Browns. During the interview, the two stood at least six feet apart. However, they then closed the gap and hugged after the interview was finished. The action has caused criticism on social media.

This past Tuesday, Jan. 4, Rodgers defended his interaction at Lambeau Field in Green Bay during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“Look, I’ve known EA (Erin Andrews) for a long time and I think the whole thing is obviously a little bit strange,” he said.

He then added that the gesture was justified and was no different from the many close-range encounters he had with other players on the field.

“And that’s my friend,” he said. “That’s the same way I’d hug a friend seeing them on the field, or hug a guy on the opposing team that you have respect for and you play against. Look, I do what I’m told in those situations about keeping distance, but I’m a hugger and I enjoy seeing my friends postgame.”

Rodgers is expected to win the this year’s MVP award despite the controversy surrounding his conflict with the NFL’s coronavirus protocol, as the Packers go into Week 18 with an NFL-best 13-3 record.
