Sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN that Phoenix Suns’ Chris Paul has declined the $44 million player option on his contract for next season. Paul and the Suns will negotiate a new deal after talks can start on Monday.
Paul’s deadline to reject the option was Sunday. He is now an unrestricted free agent.
Paul was two wins short of the first NBA championship during his first season with the Suns. Last season, he averaged 16.4 points on 49.9 percent shooting (39.5 percent from the 3-point line), 8.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
Paul previously hinted that he wanted to stay with the Suns after their Game 6 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals.
“I think for me, I just look at myself and figure out how can I get better, what I could have done more, and make sure I come back next season ready to do it again,” said Paul.
