The NFL reported Monday that the Chicago Bears wide receiver Javon Wims has been suspended without pay for two games for violating the league’s unsportsmanlike conduct policy.
Wims was ejected from Sunday’s 26-23 loss to the New Orleans Saints after he punched Saints’ cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the game.
Video shows Gardner-Johnson ripping Wims mouthpiece off his facemask. Before he threw his punch, Wims appeared to try and pull off Garner-Johnson’s mouthpiece.
According to the NFL Network, Wims told Bears trainers that Gardner-Johnson spit on him as well.
Wim’s has played one season for Chicago and has five catches for 35 yards and one touchdown.
Gardner-Johnson has a reputation for getting under his opponent’s skin, and even taunted his own teammate, Michael Thomas, who slapped him during a practice this season.
After the game, Gardner-Johnson taunted Wims on social media about the Saints’ win over the Bears.
#Bears WR Javon Wims told team officials that #Saints CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson spit on him, in addition to ripping out Wims’ mouthpiece, during Sunday’s game before Wims sucker punched Gardner-Johnson, per sources.
Wims was ejected. The NFL is now considering a suspension, too.
