Atlanta Hawks name Nate McMillan permanent head coach

The Atlanta Hawks have announced they reached a four-year deal with interim head coach Nate McMillan to make him the permanent head coach of the team.

The Hawks initially hired the 56-year-old in November as an assistant coach under Lloyd Pierce. They later appointed McMillan as interim head coach in March after firing Pierce, and he led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks.

“They wanted to name me head coach,” said McMillan. “I had to take some time to think about that. I talked with Coach Pierce, he basically said he thought that I should take it and move forward.”

Previously, McMillan had coached the Seattle Supersonics (2001-2005), the Portland Trail Blazers (2006-2012), and the Indiana Pacers (2014-2020). He has a career regular-season record of 88-599 over 20 years.
