Titans blow top seed on Bengals’ walk-off FG

Everything was set up for the Tennessee Titans to succeed.

From the number one seed, to the bye week, to having a chance to pull out their AFC Divisional Playoff Game against Cincinnati. But in an instant, it all unraveled, and the Titans season came to an end.

The Titans had the football in the final three minutes, but Ryan Tannehill’s third interception of the game gave the Bengals life, and Evan McPherson drilled a 52-yard field goal to propel Cincinnati to a 19-16 victory.

McPherson’s fourth field goal of the game not only sends the Bengals on the road to the AFC Championship Game next week at Buffalo or Kansas City, it sends the Titans home wondering exactly what went wrong on Saturday.

The Titans, whose offense had sputtered for much of the game, had been bailed out by their defense, were in the driver’s seat the end with what looked to be a familiar script ready to be written. Taking possession of the ball at their own 19 with 2:43 left, the Titans drove to their own 40 with 28 seconds left before Tannehill’s ill-fated pass was tipped by Eli Apple and picked off by Logan Wilson.

From there, Joe Burrow hit JaMarr Chase for a 19-yard gain, putting the Bengals in range for McPherson’s walk-off winner.
