It was either the official end of the worst season of Baker Mayfield’s career, or the official start of the next chapter of his career.

Either way, it took place on Wednesday, in Los Angeles, where orthopedic surgeon Dr. Orr Limpisvasti repaired a torn labrum in Mayfield’s left shoulder, which was the most serious of a series of injuries the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft suffered during the Cleveland Browns’ disappointing 2021 season.

“Surgery went great,” Mayfield said in a video he posted on Twitter. “It was a complete success. . . checked that box off to get this fixed, and now it’s on the way to the road to recovery. This is one of those steps to get back to my true self.”

Mayfield’s 2021 self took a U-turn on September 19, when he attempted to make a tackle after throwing an interception against the Houston Texans. His left shoulder popped out, then back into the socket.

Then things went from bad to “bleep”.
