SAN ANTONIO – The Spurs announced Monday that Rudy Gay, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Derrick White and Quinndary Weatherspoon are going through the NBA’s health and safety COVID-19 protocols and are not with the team.
The Spurs also announced that leading scorer and distributor DeMar DeRozan is away from the team for personal reasons.
DeRozan announced last Friday that his father had died.
The six players will not travel to Oklahoma City on Tuesday for Wednesday night’s game against the Thunder, the Spurs’ first contest since they defeated the Hornets in Charlotte on Feb. 14.
The COVID-19 interruption came in the middle of the Spurs’ rodeo road trip and forced the NBA to postpone their games at Detroit, Cleveland, New York and Indiana.
The health and safety protocols can last up to 14 days.
The Spurs announced they are practicing Monday afternoon. Coach Gregg Popovich will meet with reporters via Zoom afterward.
LaMarcus Aldridge, who has been sidelined since Feb. 3 with a sore right hip, is scheduled to participate in practice. His status for Wednesday’s game will be updated Tuesday, the Spurs announced.
If Aldridge is updated to active, the Spurs will have 10 available players for Wednesday’s game, including Luka Samanic and rookie Tre Jones, who were called up from the G League on Sunday.
The NBA mandates that teams must have eight available players for a game.
Weatherspoon is the only non-rotation player among the six players…
